Tips for Commercial or Owner Operator Truck Drivers in Georgia for Avoiding Falls

One of the least apparent hazards faced by commercial or owner operator truck drivers in Georgia are slips and falls while getting in and out of their trucks. It is a routine act done countless times over the years that nearly everyone takes for granted. If you do something enough times, eventually you will make a mistake. Even though the average distance to the ground is only four feet, serious injury can result because you are not expecting the fall.

Of course, falls are not limited to getting on and off the truck. Loading docks, rounded fuel tanks, and your trailer are other common places to fall. To reduce your risk of injury, keep these general guidelines in mind:

Use The Three Point Rule

When entering and exiting your truck, make a habit of using three points of contact with the steps and hand rails at all times. This means two feet and one hand or two hands and one foot. Should one of your contact points slip, you will have two in place to recover your balance. Always face the cab when exiting.

Check For Slippery Surfaces

When inside the cab, check the mirror frame with your hand. If it is iced over, the steps will be iced as well. Before stepping on to the ground, examine it closely for ice or grease.

Use Proper Footwear

Use footwear with non-slip soles. Avoid soles that are hard and smooth. Leather is one of the worst sole materials and readily slips on snowy, wet, or oily surfaces. Use footwear with soft rubber soles and tread.

Be Careful On Metal Surfaces

Metal is slippery when oily, or wet with water or fuel. This also applies to diamond plate steps and especially to rounded fuel tanks.

Ensure There Is Good Visibility

Make sure you have adequate lighting when getting into, on to, or walking on vehicles. A handheld flashlight is not adequate lighting when you need your hands for climbing. Visibility also means being able to see where you are placing your feet. Therefore, never carry bulky packages that prevent you from seeing your footing. Use a cart instead.

Remember that traffic accidents are not the only kind. Be alert and cautious in all situations where injury can happen. Accidents almost always happen where you least expect them. For more information on safety and truck insurance, please contact us.
