Commercial truck tire maintenance is not a quick glance at the tread before departure. A tire carries the combined effects of load, inflation, speed, alignment, braking, road temperature and previous impact damage. When one factor is wrong, the evidence often appears in wear patterns or pressure changes before the tire fails.
South Carolina routes can expose equipment to summer heat, coastal rain, construction debris and long interstate runs. Those conditions do not automatically cause a failure, but they reduce the margin for a tire that is already underinflated, overloaded or damaged. Drivers and maintenance teams need a shared process for finding a problem, deciding whether the vehicle can move and documenting the repair.
Commercial truck tire maintenance begins with cold inflation pressure
Pressure should be checked with a reliable gauge when the tire is cold, using the carrier’s specification for the tire, axle and load. A visual inspection alone cannot identify a modest pressure loss. Dual tires can be especially misleading because the properly inflated tire may support part of the load while its mate is low.
Pressure naturally rises as a tire operates and generates heat. Bleeding air from a hot tire to return it to a cold-pressure target can leave the tire underinflated after it cools. A driver who finds an unexpected hot-pressure reading should follow the carrier’s maintenance procedure rather than guess at the correction.
A recurring need for air is a defect signal, not normal maintenance. The cause may be a puncture, leaking valve, damaged rim, poor seal or repair problem. Recording repeated adjustments helps the maintenance shop see a pattern that might otherwise disappear between drivers or shifts.
Read tread wear as a diagnostic clue
Tread depth matters, but the shape of the wear can reveal more than a single measurement. Wear concentrated on both shoulders can indicate chronic underinflation. Center wear may point to an inflation or application problem. Feathering, cupping or one-sided wear can be associated with alignment, suspension, balance or component issues.
The correct response is not simply to rotate or replace the tire and return the truck to service. If the mechanical cause remains, the new tire may develop the same pattern. Maintenance personnel should examine the wheel end, suspension and alignment history, then document what was inspected and corrected.
Federal requirements for commercial vehicle tires appear in 49 CFR Part 393, Subpart G. The regulation is the governing source; company checklists should be designed to help drivers recognize conditions that require repair or evaluation rather than replace the actual standard.
Inspect sidewalls, beads and valve hardware
Sidewalls should be examined for cuts, bulges, exposed material, abrasion and impact marks. A visible bubble can indicate internal separation even when the tire still holds air. Drivers should also look at the bead area and rim for damage, rust trails or movement. Valve stems need caps and should not be rubbing against adjacent components. Extensions used on dual assemblies must be supported and maintained so vibration does not create a leak.
Debris between dual tires can cut a sidewall or generate heat. The spacing should be clear, and the tires should not touch under load. Mismatched diameter, construction or inflation can cause one tire to carry more than its share of the axle load.
Match inflation and tire capacity to the actual load
A tire can be properly inflated for one load and inadequate for another. The fleet needs accurate axle weights, tire ratings and inflation specifications for the equipment it operates. Loading practices that repeatedly place excess weight on one axle or side of the vehicle should be corrected at the source.
Gross vehicle weight is not the only concern. A combination can be under its total limit while an individual axle or tire is overloaded. Drivers should understand how cargo placement, fuel, auxiliary equipment and trailer configuration affect distribution. When the business changes commodities or adds equipment, the tire and axle plan should be reviewed rather than copied from the previous operation.
Separate normal heat from warning signs
All operating tires generate heat. The concern is an unusual difference between comparable wheel positions or a combination of heat, odor, smoke, vibration and pressure loss. A hot hub or dragging brake can transfer heat to the tire, so the source may not be the casing itself.
If a driver feels a new vibration, hears a rhythmic thump or sees smoke, continuing to the next scheduled stop can turn a repairable condition into a blowout, fire or loss of control. The driver should slow smoothly, move to a safe legal location and follow the carrier’s emergency procedure. Make commercial truck tire maintenance easy to repeat
A workable routine follows the same path around the combination each time. The driver can begin at the left front, inspect each wheel position, cross behind the trailer only when safe, and finish at the cab. Consistency reduces the chance of skipping an inside dual or trailer axle.
The inspection should cover:
- Cold pressure measured with a dependable gauge.
- Tread depth and irregular wear across the tire.
- Cuts, bulges, exposed material and embedded objects.
- Valve stems, caps, rims, lug areas and dual spacing.
- Evidence of brake heat, oil leakage or wheel-end problems.
- Changes in vibration, handling or pressure since the prior trip.
A checklist is useful only if the driver has authority to stop the process when a defect appears. “Monitor it” should not become a substitute for a clear maintenance decision.
Document commercial truck tire maintenance throughout equipment life
Maintenance records should identify the unit, wheel position, tire identifier when used, pressure, measured tread, reported condition and corrective action. When a casing is repaired or moved, the history should remain traceable. This information helps the fleet evaluate recurring failures, casing performance and replacement intervals.
Photographs can supplement a report, particularly for irregular wear or sidewall damage, but they do not replace a physical examination. A shop note should state what the technician found, what work was completed and why the tire was returned to service or removed.
Use insurance as financial protection, not a maintenance plan
