Liability Increase in Commercial Trucking Insurance

If you already have commercial trucking insurance, you might want to consider changing your premium or switching to another trucking insurance company.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration wants to increase the minimum liability coverage for all trucking companies. The current minimum is $750,000, but they said that since The American Trucking Associations found that just 1% of trucking accidents “…cause damages that exceed $1 million,” they have submitted a proposed rule which will increase the minimum.

According to a news article, there are three contributing factors to a trucking accident. They are: the actual driver, the speed of the truck, and any distractions. Given that truckers must drive long hours and meet deadlines – they are usually tired while driving fast in order to meet these deadlines. It is no wonder that the article states that “…about 1 in 10 highway deaths occurs in a crash involving a large truck….”

Just recently, in Texas, a truck owned by Quickway Transportation crashed into a bus carrying four college softball players. Now their parents are suing the company for upwards of $1 million.
