It can be really hard to pack when you go out on the road as an owner operator. You may be overwhelmed by the amount of things that you need to take along when you hit the road, especially when you see how little space you have to put everything. You may want to take everything, but the truth is that you can’t take everything that you want to.
Here are some things that you shouldn’t forget to pack when you hit the road.
Flashlights. Flashlights are essential when you are on the road. Whether you have to look at something during the day or night, there are going to be times when a flashlight would help you see better. Looking under the hood can be hard, even when the sun is out. If you break down at night, you need a flashlight to see what is going on!
Work gloves. These are needed so that you can do a few things around the truck, without hurting your hands. They are also needed when you are in colder climates. They will protect your hands no matter what you are doing.
Tools. You should never leave without a complete tool kit. Though you can’t take your entire tool box, there are plenty of things that you should not forget. These may include screwdrivers, hammers, adjustable wrenches, wrenches, and other things. You are going to want the tools to be able to change a tire on the side of the road, so a power tool will be very handy.
Fluids. It is a good idea to carry some extra fluids when you are out on the road. This may include windshield wiper fluid, extra oil or coolant, and even brake fluid may be essential to have beside you, just in case.
Extra bulbs. You should always carry extra headlights and tail lights, as well as lights for your trailer, so you can easily fix them and get back to the job at hand. You don’t want to drive even five or ten miles without lights! That could be very dangerous for you and others who are around you!
Cleaning supplies. You also want to keep some things around to keep your space clean. You should always have a trash bag handy so that you aren’t throwing things around to pick up later. Windshield cleaner is also necessary so that you can see as well as possible. You may want to keep some wipes handy to clean up any messes that you may make (especially if they are going to overwhelm you). You may not be able to focus if you are worried about the mess on the floor.
Though you may want to bring everything, the truth is that you don’t have the space to take it all. However, a few basic tools and extra fluids may be the thing that keeps you on the road. You want to be able to change a tire and get right back to it. You may also notice that your truck is low on coolant, so you are going to want to be able to refill it now, instead of looking for the closest place to stop! Flashlights and work gloves are also essentials, so that you can keep on track, without having to look for a place that sells what you need! This can make it hard to focus on your driving when you are busy looking for the next Walmart or supply chain to stop and get what you need.
