Tips to Avoid Harassing Situations as a Female Truck Driver

Since there are not as many female truck drivers as their men counterparts, many females will say that they deal with harassment on a regular basis. They do their best to walk away from the glances and comments that get made to and about them. They try not to listen to the comments that are made on the CB. Not only that, but they just try to do their job.

But could they do more? Here are some tips to help female truck drivers avoid harassing situations.

Walk away from a situation that makes you feel uncomfortable. If you are getting a lot of attention and comments, the best thing that you can do is to just walk away. Don’t put yourself in any situation that could escalate and get you in trouble. If you are walking to or from your truck, step up the pace so that you can get where you need to be as soon as possible. Don’t take your time. This only gives them more time to stare and talk about you.

Even if you are at a loading or unloading dock, you can walk away from the talk. There is no reason why you can’t wait in the privacy of your truck, instead of listening to the workers talk about and stare at you. If they can’t see you, they will work harder to get it unloaded or loaded faster, and you will be on your way sooner than you imagined.

You can also walk away when you are at a rest area. Even if you wanted to stay and watch some television at a rest area, you can walk away if you aren’t comfortable with the situation. Truckers relaxing together can become quite loud and obnoxious, so you may prefer to spend time in your truck relaxing. Though you may have wanted to spend time with the truckers and watch television, it may not be worth the stress that comes along with it.

Turn off the CB. If you don’t like what is being talked about between truckers, you don’t have to listen to it. Simply turn it off and don’t give it another thought!

Dress appropriately at all times. If you want to be taken seriously, you have to dress seriously. Wear clothes that fit you well and don’t show off your assets. Even if you just wear jeans and a t-shirt, make sure that they are clean and cover everything that it needs to. If you flaunt your assets, you could just be asking for trouble.

Female truck drivers may feel like they have no other choice but to deal with the sexual advances that they may deal with on a regular basis, but the truth is that they really don’t. They should walk away from any situation that makes them uncomfortable. Even if they are waiting for their trailer to be loaded or unloaded, they don’t need to deal with the comments made by the dockworkers. They can wait in their truck for everything to be done, instead of listening and dealing with the comments. They can walk away at rest stops and even turn off their CB if the truckers talk is making them super uncomfortable.

It is also a good idea to dress appropriately at all times. If you want to be taken seriously, you need to dress that way. Wearing jeans that are way too tight and shirts that barely cover you, isn’t going to stop people from looking! Cover up and get the job done!
