Reasons It is Better to Be an Owner Operator

Whether you are a new or seasoned driver, you may be thinking about becoming an owner-operator. Though it can be scary, there are many reasons why a person would want to own their own truck (or lease one) and become an owner-operator.

Here are some reasons why you may want to leave a commercial company to go out on your own.

More money. Owner-operators make more money per mile than commercial drivers. That being said, they also have to pay for their own expenses out of their pocket so it isn’t always as glamorous as it looks. Not only do they have to pay for their fuel and truck maintenance, they also have to pay for health insurance and other expenses.

Pick and choose your loads. When you are the boss, you can decide when and where you want to drive. You can focus on long hauls across the United States or you may just want to stick to your state so you can be home every night. You may want to work for a few days in a row so that you can take a few days off later in the week. It is up to you.

And your truck. When you decide to go out on your own, you get to choose the right truck for you. You can get a simple truck or find one with all of the bells and whistles that you want.

Many people decide to become owner-operators because they see that they can make a lot more money as one. They can also pick and choose their loads. They may want to haul close to home, or they can choose to drive all over the United States. They can also mix and match their loads to fit their families’ schedules.
