Tips for Living on the Road as a commercial truck driver

Truck drivers spend hours, days, and even weeks on the road. Cross-country drivers may only go home for a few days at a time. This life isn’t always easy but it can be a very rewarding one.

Here are some tips to survive life on the road.

Make sure that you have the support of your loved ones behind you. This job is hard enough, but it can be overwhelming if your family isn’t on board. They need to be willing to sacrifice time with you, knowing that you are helping the country.

That being said, make sure that you spend time with those you love, whether you are home or on the road. You need to make your time at home count by spending as much of it with those that you love. When you are on the road, you need to find time to check in regularly so that you stay connected with your family. Text messages, phone calls, and even video chats can help make the distance seem closer.

Take plenty of breaks. It is important that you take breaks while you are on the road. Take a leisurely lunch with a walk in the middle of the day. If you feel tired, pull over and at least walk around your truck to get your muscles moving. This will help to wake you up.

Make your evening break count. Though you may want to drive until it is time to go to bed, this isn’t healthy. You need to make sure that you enjoy some downtime every night before you go to bed. You should try to fit in exercise, while still getting at least eight hours of sleep so you are ready to get moving in the morning.

Though it can be hard to spend days on the road, many truckers enjoy it. However, they need to make sure that their family is on board and find ways to stay connected. It is also important to take care of your health by taking plenty of breaks and giving yourself some time to relax every night before you go to bed.
