How Conducting Your Own Level I Inspection Can Reduce Your Semi Truck Insurance Premiums

Pre-inspections are a critical step in the routine of any truck driver. Not only do they help you catch any problems in the cargo or any insecure parts, they help you keep your vehicle compliant after hard days on the road. Keeping your commercial truck compliant with CSVA standards is one of the best ways to keep your semi truck insurance premiums low: not only will violations be on your record, keeping your vehicle in top shape helps reduce accidents and collisions.

What does a Level I North American Standard Inspection include?

This level of inspection includes two general categories: the driver and the vehicle. The first element includes an inspection of your:

  • Driver’s license
  • Driver’s record of duty status
  • Logged driving hours; and,
  • Medical Examiner’s Certificate and Skill Performance Evaluation (SPE) Certificate, as necessary.

This inspection could also include an inspection for alcohol or drugs.

Agents and law enforcement officers will also inspect your vehicle for any issues related to your:

  • Vehicle inspection reports
  • Vehicle systems, including brakes, fuel, exhaust, electrical, and steering
  • driveshaft
  • seat belts and cargo security
  • frames and the trailer body, as well as coupling devices
  • suspension
  • brakes
  • tires, wheels, rims, and hubs
  • windshield wipers
  • lights, including all lamps and signals; and,
  • emergency exits in passenger vehicles.

If you routinely inspect your own vehicle according to stringent standards, you can rest assured that your vehicle can pass planned and random inspections. You can also benefit from your diligence by negotiating for lower insurance premiums or better coverage due to a good safety record. Go to J.E.B.
