Commercial Truck Driving Tips for Newbies From Old Truckers

Many commercial truck drivers have been doing it for years. Their years of experience can become invaluable for newer truckers. Inexperienced drivers need to listen to any advice that they can get. It will only make them better drivers!

Here is some advice for newer drivers from those who have spent years crossing the country in their big rigs.

Don’t swerve fast, just to miss an animal. No one wants to injure (or kill) an animal, but it isn’t worth the risk. You could hurt yourself or others on the road by trying to swerve quickly to avoid an animal. Instead, you need to slow down, hold on to the wheel, and keep your rig going straight. There isn’t anything else that you can do.

Always look at your truck before you leave it. Any time that you get out of your truck, you need to do a quick walk around. You want to make sure that you have turned off all of the lights (and blinkers). You don’t want your turn signal on while you are taking a much-needed break (and meal).

Don’t hesitate to ask for help. Most experienced truckers love to talk with other people who live on the road. They also love to help new people get started in their careers so you should not be afraid to talk to them when you see them at truck stops. You could learn some really invaluable advice, just by sitting with the right person at lunch. If you are driving for a company, you may also have different people that you can lean on as you learn.

Old-time truck drivers have a lot more experience so you should sink in as much information from them as you can. You also shouldn’t be scared to ask them for advice. Most of the time, you could learn more from them than you ever imagined.
