Commercial or Owner Operator Truck Insurance: Protect Yourself From Fraud

Fraud costs the insurance industry billions of dollars every year. The Coalition Against Insurance Fraud estimates that insurance fraud of any kind totals up to $80 billion per year. We know what you are thinking: ”That is a lot of money.” You are right. That is a significant amount of money, and it is also a significant amount of harm that is being done to honest people.

Scams are all over the place, including in the state of Texas. Even if you have never been the victim of fraud or a scam, there is a chance that you know someone who has been scammed or lied to for access to their confidential information or financial accounts. You may think it will never happen to you, until you actually become a victim of fraud or scams.

While you will not be able to stop all the scam attempts, you can do things to protect yourself by understanding some of the most common trucking scams. Here are some tips that we believe can help prevent insurance fraud or reduce the amount of damages if you are ever involved in an accident:

  • Alert the authorities and file an official report
  • Obtain the name and key information of the other drivers and/or passengers
  • Check for license plate numbers and make sure everything matches(such as the front plate and the back plate)
  • Use your camera to take pictures of everything so you can have concrete proof of the damages
  • Do not share confidential and personal information with anyone who claims to be a medical professional or a legal representative, especially if you did not contact first

Another way to protect yourself from fraudulent activities and scams is to use a dash camera. Fraudsters like to go after commercial and owner-operator drivers because of the large size of the truck and the type of insurance they carry.
