Build Healthy Driving Habits Through Nutrition

Nebraska is regularly ranked within the top fifteen healthiest states, but good health can be a little hard to maintain when you’re a truck driver. Heart disease, high cholesterol, and sleep disorders are all major health risks that can easily creep up on you due to the schedule and job requirements. But creating an actively preventative plan to mitigate those risks not only help keep you healthy, it can reduce your health insurance. Here are three habits to build:

  1. Buy your food at a grocery instead of a restaurant. Many grocery stores now have delis, food bars, and sections of prepared, hot food for people swinging by for a quick meal. Even equivalently healthy (or unhealthy) food from a grocery store is better because of lower prices, which give you room in your budget for healthy, more expensive options, and smaller portions. Shopping for snacks at a grocery store is also better than shopping at a convenience store because you come into contact with healthier options that gas stations don’t stock and because you can plan snacks ahead of time.
  2. Schedule snacks that fit the time of day. The body cools down slightly and becomes more lethargic during the window of 1-3 p.m. Even if you can’t schedule a break during those hours, this is the perfect time for snacks like carrots and almonds that can help you stay alert.
  3. Know your sleep schedule so you can cut off caffeine. The general rule of thumb is to not drink coffee after five o’clock. More specifically, depending on how much coffee you’ve had throughout the day, you want to stop drinking it four to six hours before you sleep. This can be tricky if you’re using coffee as a pick-me-up in the evening, but coffee can throw off your sleep schedule.

Building habits and purchasing food before you have a specific craving are good habits can that increase your health and reduce your health insurance premiums. But more than that, having a nutritional diet can help you focus on the road and drive safer whether it’s in the early afternoon or later at night, and that can also reduce your truckers insurance.
